Roll Museum emerges from a derelict steel production site rich in steel history. The formal scope of the museum takes advantage of the adjacent Monongahela River by pinching the landscape along its edge and peeling its roof back for views of the historic Carrie Furnace.

 

Steel construction is used in this project to allow for large open spaces and for program volumes to float above the main concourse. In combination with permanent and changing exhibits the museum itself puts steel on display by demonstrating how steel parts connect to one another to create structure, enclosure, and a connection with the landscape.
